Four Huge Web Design Errors That Are Costing You Business Online is an article that I ran across this morning. And I believe it to be excellent in determining four of the most common pitfalls that web designers make in designing. Now, I wanted to extend the list to 8 common website mistakes: So the first four covered by the article are:

1. Your website must focus on capturing email addresses

2. Stuffing your home page with way too much information

3. Loading the site with slow-loading graphics (more about this can be read at Mr. Nielsen’s usability website)
4. No attempt to discern what the prospect wants

And the next four common web design mistakes related to online business are:

5. No invitation to converting. Many websites have everything in place, good design, good colors, amazing corporate image and great content. But when it comes to inviting their visitors to perform an action they fail miserably. Often I see multitudes of designs out there without contact information in every page and sometimes after reading all the content you believe that you were being informed of their products and services and not being invited to purchase from them. Determine if your website is informational, interactional or transactional. If you are after lead generation then make sure that you prepare the channels and the design to capture leads.

6. Follow trends because they are trends and not because they are useful. With Web 2.0 we are starting to see how many websites have a clean look, better navigation and better inter-browser support. Sometimes though, website owners include elements just because they are being used in their competitors website or because they thought they were cool.

Examples of this awful practice is the use of blinking text to attract attention, or the use of sound and music in Flash without the possibility of stopping it! Be careful to include only elements of design that would improve your audience experience. Also, never use sound in your site unless it is user-initiated.

7. “Let’s make some space”. The mistake of pushing the limits of the home page because we have new products and we have new banners and we have new… STOP! Instead of including new elements in your home page remove something in order to add something and always plan ahead your space.

Many websites decide that they want to include advertising banners, flash images, extra links, new headings and many other things that don’t fit into their initial conception. The recommendation is that if you find that you need new elements then redesign your site. If redesigning sounds unnecessary then those elements are probably not crucial. Adding some things here and there is ok, the problem is when your next big idea of the day ends up in the footer of your homepage.

8. The “I don’t like it mistake”. This mistake is the biggest and most often mistake in my opinion. If you don’t like your design that doesn’t necessarily mean that your web site will not appeal to your audience. When you are tempted to say to your web designer: “I don’t like it”, think for a second who is going to buy from this website? and think if they would like it.

This is specially important for “generation X business owners”. Generation X kids like video games, skateboarding, X Games, surfing and what not, but the owners of the business that sell products for this audience have difficulty to separate their own preferences with their audience preferences. The best way to avoid this mistake is to proof read your design with members of your intended audience.

I just got my new iPhone and I honestly love the way it looks, the design and the software. Man that thing is beautiful. However I am always aware that with design you have the possibility of mistakes by not considering certain problems. You can’t plan for every scenario out there. That was the case with this iteration by Apple. The problem simply is that if you hold your phone with your left hand and cover the band in the lower left corner, the iPhone losses the signal. Your hand functions like a electric conductor and simply the antenna gets interference. The kind of interference that could result in the loss of a call, but most importantly, after many and many times could lead to a more serious issue with the phone.

This unfortunately is big news. Why? Well, Apple wanted to downplay the problem by just saying go ahead and hold it in other ways. However is not that simple. If you start questioning now the reasons behind creating the special Apple cases called bumpers then you might end with the conclusion that the problem was there and that Apple was misleading by saying that the bumpers were to replicate the success of the iPad case. That spells PR disaster all over. And PR disasters are what spell problems for a company more than anything.

Apple is my favorite company, they really are, but remember that you can’t always be perfect. Your flaws eventually will come to light and when you have pointed the flaws of many others (Adobe), it is definitely a bit more difficult to handle.

For Apple, the easiest way out of this mess is first to accept it, as opposed to down play it. The second step is to create a plan to make it right. Finally make sure that your devote followers end with a sense in their mouth that Apple is the kind of company that they believe in. Apple will do the right thing. Apple is not like everybody else.

For us, oh well, let’s try not to forget to hold the phone only with our right hand.

Best,

Alex

It is clear to me now, after using the ipad for 2 days, that the device is great for consumption but not ideal for creation. Even though you can, just as with a rock you can hit a nail, it is probably best to use other tools for the job.

Now, is it great? It is gorgeous… You can read almost anything on the web the way is supposed to be. I said the word “almost” with a reason. What about the Flash experience right?

I am all for iPad, but I will be creating content in my MacPro, then consuming it in the Ipad…

Now, one of the things that I have contemplated this week is the back and forth battle between Apple and Adobe. Is it good to have Flash on the iPhone? Is it good for the platform?

Ok, let’s be frank for a second. Apple is what it is today because of Adobe. Think about it. All design is done in Adobe software. Every single piece of paper that Apple has ever published has been published in Adobe software. Every simple image that has been used by Apple has a 70% chance or better of coming from Photoshop. The question is: Is it fair for Apple to say to Adobe: “Hey yeah thanks for all the good stuff you do for our platform in the macOSX but we don’t really want you in the iPhone OS.” I don’t think so.

I think is a bit unethical. I am a big Apple fan, honestly, I have a MacPro for my office, I have a MacBook Pro for my laptop, I have a 3G iphone and my Iphone 2G is owned by my wife + also I gave her an ipod for her birthday. Finally, I got an Ipad the day it came out. So please don’t react to this post as if it came from a hater.

The problem that I see is this: When your interest in my money gets the best of you is when I have a problem. Why do you allow people to plug the iPad to a bigger screen but only allow photos and videos and perhaps presentations (if you get the extra app $9.99)? Why? Simple, because otherwise it eats up into the MacBook sales. Please read that word carefully: sales.

When I am giving a professional presentation I need to be able to show my clients websites. It is logical that I would love to fire up Safari and show them right there and then. But you can’t. Oh well, I guess I am going to be having to carry my MacBook Pro with me to those presentations, so why even bother with the Keynote for Ipad?

The other problem that I see is that if I want to produce an iPhone APP then I have to use only a certain kind of tools. Apple’s excuse is that the quality of Apps would go down. But hold on for a second, you have plenty of crappy apps already in the App Store. But most importantly, if you want quality then enforce quality: for example, deny bad quality apps. However, it is not really about the quality. It is about keeping the control of the ecosystem.

The problem with that is that if you control the timing of the developers, they will eventually get tired and sick of that timing and run to somebody that gives them freedom (hint: Android).

Imagine for a second an Ipad user that tries an Android based Slate computer that responses well, that allows Flash, that allows full projection, that allows tethering, that allows everything that you have been restricting… I can tell you one thing, if it is well executed, it will be the beginning of the end.

Adobe and Apple are excellent partners only for one reason: together they offer the best tools available – the tools that developers want to use. These days Apple wants to have some parts of the pie only for themselves. This goes against the spirit of providing the best value for your buck, and that bites in the end.

My recommendation to Adobe is to put pressure on Apple. How? Well, how about delaying the CS6 Versions for Mac a couple of months? So PC users have the best tools available first. Believe me, you won’t have to pull the trigger on that one. Apple understands the importance of Adobe software in MacOS X. And if they don’t then it will result in the value reduction of Adobe’s tools. In other words, if Adobe acts like its software is worthless then Apple is obviously going to respect them less. If Adobe acts like the most important piece of software in the every single Creative Agency in the world, then perhaps Apple will rethink their relationships.

My recommendation to Apple is simple too. Stop making calculations about features, cannibalization of profits and sales and go back to providing always top tools. There is nothing like the iPhone out there, period. So make the iPhone the best thing under the sun, make sure you continue to listen to the fans and adapt. Also keep your partners at bay. ATT is trying to exploit the data relationship because is a money bag: don’t let them get greedy. I think that the Verizon talks for Iphone are the best thing that could happen. I don’t really like Verizon, but just by having that possibility makes ATT a bit more aware.

I use Apple products because I like the experience and because it allows me some kind of additional pleasure. If that pleasure goes away by limitations and incapacities then I am sure I’ll start looking for the next big thing.

Best of luck to both.

Ok so the latest I have discovered in this crazy world of SEO is that Google is now testing a little utility that allows you to fetch pages with GoogleBot. You heard it right.

So you might be thinking: “I want that”. Perhaps your second thought is: “How?” Ok here it is:

Just visit the webmaster tools platform. How? Oh ok, go to https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/googlebot-fetch and if you don’t yet have an account with Google you will have to create one. Once inside you need to verify the ownership of your site. Finally just ask GoogleBot to fetch the page that you want him to go get. Then as the best Golden Retriever he runs fast and comes back with a “Pending” status. Fortunately pending was for only seconds. Then he comes back to you and in his mouth has a success message. When you click on the “success” link you get your page. Just like that. Can you believe it? Once GoogleBot was this upscale pet that belonged to the most highest society of the internet. Only a ring of people could ask him to fetch and he would even think about it.

Now, almost anybody can ask him to go fetch and he does it. He goes and comes back with it.

Is there any benefit from this? The most important one is that you would have immediate understanding of your indexing capabilities. If your page can’t be retrieved for whatever reason you will know almost instantaniously.

Enjoy guys enjoy.

So, my wife and I just got back from the U2 concert. The first thing I have to say is that the stage is huge! Apart from the mere size of the stage, the whole experience from digital media to lighting to sound was absolutely first class.

Is that why that stadium was full? I don;t think so. Hence the purpose of this post. I think that all U2 success is based on one concept of one man. The man’s name is Bono. The concept is simple to know, however is incredibly difficult to execute:

Do whatever you want in life, but whatever you choose to do, do it boldly

What does that mean? Well, all of us are very good at being half-hearted at most things. However a life lived in this fasion takes away more value than it gives. We are truly like sheep that need direction. If you feel like somebody is bold, I believe that mentally you think that they know better than you what the right direction is.

Thousands of people payed a good ticket price to listen to U2 in concert. They did so thanks to the fact that Bono decided to make U2′s music as bold as he could. He makes their music more than a concert. Is a political-social-spiritual experience. He shares his views with the audience. Those views by the way are pretty bold as well. In fact I feel that he is past the point of being afraid of what people are going to say about them. He is past the point of caring about media and about public opinion. He has arrived at the higher place where now he has a true voice.

I believe we are all called to that place. Voicing our beliefs and our direction without fear or regret. Sharing who you really are is key in living a life of purpose and meaning. And the only way of getting there is to be bold.

Next time you are presented with the opportunity of doing your something, do it boldly. Don’t just half-do it. Don’t do an ok job. Go full blast. Give your all. Give your life. Be relentless and do it with the intensity that you would expect from the best at it. That would give you a voice. Once you have it, use it for good.
