So I came across a post by RTP Harry from http://runtingsproper.blogspot.com/2010/03/google-analytics-tracking-content.html where he explains how to track scroll depth in Google Analytics.

Since I was looking for exactly that for one of our projects I was excited to give it a go. However it didn’t work. And so I started in my usual journey of understanding why it wasn’t working, fixing it and then sharing it with all of our readers. So here it is:

Problem:

You want to track the engagement of your users and therefore you would like to see in Google Analytics if your users are scrolling down your pages and reaching at least 90% of the length.

Solution:

This could be done in several ways, however in this case probably the easiest solution is to use Jquery (client-side) and Google Analytics.

To begin, Google Analytics provides something called Event Tracking. This allows to track things happening in your website, blog or page. And that is exactly what we are after. Most of the time this behavior is used to track downloads of PDFs videos or clicks on links. This time we are going to track scrolling on a page.

Hi again everybody. This link is probably the most important of links for people out there doing more than the basics with Google Analytics. In other words, if you are just installing the code and then looking at reports and interpreting the information, this link is of little to no value for you. However, if you are looking into trying some custom segmentation, adding search engines, linking domains and sub-domains and advanced profiling and most importantly tapping into the Google Analytics API, perhaps you should take a look at this page:

Google Analytics Cheat Sheet

This page has all the information you need about the functions present in both the urchin.js and the ga.js scripts. Google Analytics API code is certainly not rocket science but it takes a little bit of time to get used to it.

I personally prefer using the API with PHP, however many people seem to be using it with the Javascript libraries. Also make sure to visit the libraries examples page if you are more a “learn by example” kind of person.

Take a look and hope this little tip helps.

If you are interested in utilizing Google Analytics as part of your measurement efforts for your site but need help getting it deployed or simply want to gain a higher level of customization, make sure to contact Merkados today.

In this episode Alex Centeno MBA. from Merkados, shows you how to install the necessary code to retrieve the IP addresses of your visitors using Google Analytics.

This online marketing technique can be modified to be used with other scripting languages other than PHP, however, in this case, the languages used are PHP and Javascript.

Also, you could use this method to generate custom segmentation other than by IP address. For example, you could create the segment by browser, by keyword (the keyword that sent the visitor to your site) or any other collected information: such as email address or name. The possibility are truly endless.

** Remember that this technique populates all profiles in your Google Analytics account and there is no way to remove this information from your account once it is there. So make sure you want it there.

Thanks again,

Google Analytics Qualified Professional program! Yeap. I took the test in over an hour. Answered a good amount of very interesting and not-so-upfront questions and got my qualification. After studying for an entire day, even though I felt like I knew GA pretty well, I decided to take the test. I think that the studying really made a huge difference, otherwise I would’ve failed.

It is an in depth analysis into basics, advanced filtering and profiling and even Regex!

Anyways, one thing disappointed me a bit. After getting my qualification I didn’t find the logos anywhere. So I decided to create my own for the time being until they come up with the official ones.

I honestly hope I am not offending anybody by doing it; cause people get offended with anything these days. I think that my clients will appreciate the extra effort to get qualified and therefore “officially” say that you know what you are talking about.
